I’m Back To Using Shampoo: Why I Quit The No Poo Method

So, I made it a total of 9 weeks without using Shampoo to wash my hair.

It went… ok.

I had some pretty good hair days where I felt like things were going really well. My hair styled easily and nicely, I didn’t have to wash it that often, and it looked pretty good.

The best days always followed when I used my homemade dry shampoo (1 part cocoa powder, 2 parts Arrowroot powder). But whenever I rinsed my hair with water in the shower, it usually ended up looking like shit until I used the dry shampoo mixture again. It also felt pretty gross after a rinse in the shower.

I didn’t hate not washing my hair. I actually really loved it and I became super attached to the idea of not washing my hair. So much so, that I even had a nightmares about accidentally washing with shampoo.

But the real turn around happened when I decided it was time for a hair cut. I was experiencing some serious anxiety about going to the salon and having to tell the stylists not to wash my hair. I was worried about what their reaction might be. I was worried that they wouldn’t want to cut my hair. I was worried that they would be totally grossed out upon touching my hair.

So for these reasons, I decided, not only to wash my hair, but also to chop all of it off. And I’m so glad I did. After 9 weeks of not shampooing my hair, that first wash was unbelievable. My hair felt so good. I think I had forgotten what it was like to have my hair feel good.

Also, now that I’ve chopped off all the dead weight that existed there, my hair looks and feels incredibly healthy.

So what’s the verdict? I’m going to continue washing my hair with shampoo on a regular basis. I’m going to shoot for once or twice a week max, continuing to used my homemade dry shampoo as needed, and I’m also switching to a more natural and sulfate-free shampoo.

Now that my hair is healthy, I want to keep it that way. You can take a look at what my hair was like throughout the no shampoo weeks here. And take a look at how my hair looks now in the picture below 🙂
